[Tue. May 22, 2012] Men, Women & MBA Workshop Series: Vol. 3 - "Are men really happy at work?” (Monday, May 14, 2012)

At the third round of this workshop series, men and women will discuss how men really feel about their work environment and life overall. These days, women seem to be receiving greater attention from society about their social and professional status and happiness at work. This is generally perceived as a good thing. However, women have to wonder about their peers who sit quietly beside them at the office: men who rarely discuss their own happiness at work. Efforts to bring more women into meaningful roles in the workplace in Japan have been largely unsuccessful for the past few decades, resulting in the famous “M Curve.” Behind the scenes, men have been swimming through the Japanese economy’s rise and fall. Along the way, what is being witnessed is an alarmingly increasing trend in the deterioration of mental health in both men and women, especially those in their 30s and 40s. Are men really happy at work? Is this an ideal work environment to lure more women into? This workshop series aims to create a place for men and women to learn to be gender-conscious, rather than gender-free, and participate in the creation of new knowledge and perspectives for workplaces that resonate with an authentic sense of being and happiness. The workshops are led by a GLOBIS lecturer who encourages open discussion among the participants. All men and women who are intrigued by the above statement are welcome to attend our workshops. We look forward to your active participation in our new, exiting endeavor.

[Tue. May 22, 2012] Men, Women & the MBA workshop series: Vol. 2 - "Men and Women at Work: How confident are you about yourself?”

At our first workshop held on June 13, 2011, we discussed how the gender matters at workplaces. We dealt with sensitive yet positive matters around the gender gap, and possible ideas for recognizing, leveraging and complementing such differences and eventually making our work environment more balanced and fulfilling for both men and women. You may be aware of some situations at work where the gender gap becomes typically highlighted. Those instances may include our career choices, tolerance for risks, and responses to pressure and stress. Among such, we’ve chosen to talk about confidence this time - Do you see any difference in how men and women build and show confidence? There would be little dispute about the benefit of having confidence in doing business. We expect good business leaders to be confident and be ease at it. Many would agree that male leaders in particular are usually not shy about displaying or “acting out” confidence. On the other hand, it has been said that there are quite a few female leaders who feel inadequate or “not good enough” for their job and intentionally keep their behaviors very low-key. This may be just a tendency and not applicable to all cases. But, if you still dare to go along with this generalization and are willing to see this tendency beyond stereotyping, do you see any reasons for such a difference? What is its implication? Does such a difference in the confidence level have anything to do with real capability of the individuals? This workshop series intends to create a place for men and women to learn to be gender-conscious, rather than gender-free, and participate in the creation of new knowledge and perspectives for workplaces that resonate with our authentic sense of being and happiness. The workshops will be led by a GLOBIS lecturer who acts to generate open discussions among the participants. All men and women who are intrigued by the above statement are welcome to our workshops. We are looking forward to your active participation in our new, exiting endeavor.
