From startup to Japan’s No. 1 MBA

GLOBIS was founded in 1992 by entrepreneur Yoshito Hori as a single marketing course in a small, rented classroom in downtown Tokyo. Since then, we’ve grown into Japan’s No. 1 MBA*.

Inspired by his time at Harvard Business School, Hori sought to combine the case method’s discussion-centric classes and real-life business examples with the search for a kokorozashi, or personal mission. He saw the need for leadership education, especially in Japan, which would allow motivated, mission-driven individuals to innovate more freely within their organizations.

The result was a unique MBA experience that cultivates practical business skills and social leadership.

Taking a vision for leadership education to the world

Since attaining formal accreditation as a university in 2006, GLOBIS has grown from a humble intake of 78 students to Japan’s largest business school*. In 2025, we welcomed 1,084 students to our MBA programs**, accounting for around 40% of all students enrolled in business-related graduate programs in Japan. Our growing student population is a testament to the impact of a curriculum that combines purpose with practicality.

In 2012, we began taking our unique education to the world. Now our English programs reach far beyond Tokyo to hub campuses in Singapore, Thailand, the United States, Belgium, and Manila. And thanks to our online options, we’re helping students all over the world find their purpose and make an impact.

In a world where visionary leadership and creative problem-solving are needed more than ever, we strive to foster business leaders everywhere with a strong sense of purpose.

A leader in practical business education

Every year, more than 1,000 students enroll in GLOBIS MBA programs and more than 250,000 company employees join corporate training by GLOBIS. They learn with us because of our ability to develop business leaders who can bring meaningful change through action. In order to foster such leaders, our classes are small and built around active student discussions facilitated by seasoned business professionals.

GLOBIS University is fully accredited by the Japan University Accreditation Association (JUAA) and recognized by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). In order to maintain our practical focus, GLOBIS does not seek to obtain international accreditation by bodies such as AACSB, EQUIS, or AMBA. Such accreditations require a minimum proportion of full-time faculty or faculty with doctorate degrees, which does not align with our objectives. We believe that students gain the most practical skills by learning from those who have achieved success in the real business world.

Our current accreditation policy ensures we meet a high standard of education, allows rapid innovation of our curriculum to meet the ever-changing needs of business, and enables us to hire faculty who can provide the best possible learning experience to our students. This impact is reflected in the career outcomes of our graduates all around the world.

International accreditation requirements GLOBIS model
Minimum proportion of faculty with a doctorate degree or limited Our priority is on faculty with proven track records in real-world business. Many of our lecturers are executives and entrepreneurs who received MBA degrees from top business schools.
Minimum number of full-time faculty members Our faculty are 100% business people, engaged full-time in running businesses. We offer no tenure, and faculty’s motivation to teach comes primarily from their passion for developing future leaders.
Curriculum must adhere to each accreditation body’s criteria of effectiveness Our curriculum quality is assured by the high standards of JUAA. Our programs are designed to meet the needs of the business world above all others.

President’s Message

GLOBIS educates visionary leaders who create and innovate societies with Technovate and kokorozashi.

Technovate is a term coined by GLOBIS by combining the words “tech” and “innovate.”  Leaders today are expected to understand and use technology, analyze big data, devise new algorithms, and leverage AI in marketing. The Technovate era has truly arrived.

Kokorozashi means knowing your purpose and pursuing your life’s personal vision. Your kokorozashi sets the direction of your life. With kokorozashi, you can meaningfully contribute to society and the people around you.

We believe that, with Technovate and kokorozashi, GLOBIS will develop visionary leaders who create and innovate societies.

I hope that every GLOBIS student will be inspired and energized to make society a better place. GLOBIS will support you at every step to achieve this goal.

Yoshito Hori
